We love providing Virginia Wine Tours at Gray Ghost. Gray Ghost is a family owned and operated winery, and is placing Virginia on the international wine map by producing internationally acclaimed wines from immaculate vineyards. Gray Ghost Vineyards is located in the NoVa area and is known for producing great wine in the mid-northern region of Virginia.
All of their grapes are aged in premium oak barrels. Their full-bodied reds are unfiltered and lighter-styled wines are fermented at low temperatures to enhance their natural fruit notes. This emphasis on quality resulted in Gray Ghost being named "Best of the East" by Vineyard and Winery Management Magazine four consecutive years! What an accomplishment. It is a fabulous stop during Virginia Wine Tours.
Wine Tasting is conducted during regular business hours.
Gray Ghost Winery and Vineyards is located at the very Southern end of what was known as Mosby's Confederacy in the Civil War. John S. Mosby was commissioned by the Confederacy to command a small cavalry unit whose purpose was to provide valuable scouting information to General Lee about the Union Army's position and strength. In a short period of time, Mosby was operating behind the Union lines in Northern Virginia; raiding Union positions; and creating as much chaos as possible. By the end of the war, Mosby had attained the rank of Colonel and commanded about 400 troops.
The image on the label was an original painting done by Al Kellert, designed to reflect the appearance of the Confederate officer during the Civil War. It helps to project the image and history of the vineyards and reflect their determination to make an unrivaled wine. The lettering for the "Gray Ghost" was actually a composite of Mosby's handwriting. A side note: Colonel Mosby was never known to have actually written or referred to himself as the Gray Ghost.
A visit to Gray Ghost offers southern hospitality, a knowledgeable staff, beautiful picnic grounds and spacious indoor facilities. Remember to ask about Gray Ghost's famous winery events, entertaining tours and one of the the most popular volunteer harvest program in the state!
